Erik Garcia
Summer Intern, Chandler, AZ

Last summer, I worked in the Software Engineering Department while pursuing an Aeronautical and Astronautical Degree. I was able to fit in perfectly because one of my strengths is setting up processes. Some of the projects I have been working on are: pioneering a software documentation system, rewriting the Software Coding Standards, helping the department attain SEI Level 3 status, and creating a work product for a Simulator.

Instead of having one designated mentor, nearly the whole department contributes to my mentorship. They share their experiences about academics and work. Being at Orbital and working in the software department made me feel comfortable and right at home. When I graduate, this truly is a company I would love to work for!

Working on a NASA project is very exciting, especially knowing that I have created, designed, or tested parts that are going into space. That is one of the most awesome concepts... a circuit board, that I touched, is going into the vacuum of space. It will see the Sun, the Moon and the stars all from outside the Earth's atmosphere... so alone above the Earth looking down... and I tested it!

My degree helps a lot in understanding the concepts presented to me by my supervisors. Most things I learn at work are familiar to me because I learned them in school. When it all comes together, with the missing pieces provided by my supervisors, the picture is so neat and beautiful! It's electronics, physics, and nature all combined together. I understand it and I am using it because it is all part of my job.

What excites me about my job is that I get to help build rockets. It will be so exciting when one launches that I worked on. I also like the friendly atmosphere at Orbital. Some of the people I originally interviewed with, who work on different programs, still stop by to say hello and see how I am doing.

I work directly with mission managers and program managers, who have a lot of good information to share with me.

Victoria McDermott
Associate Configuration Management Analyst, Dulles, VA

I really enjoy working at Orbital and am excited about being involved in the various space programs that I support. I am thrilled to know that my work is directly contributing to the development of state-of-the-art satellite systems. Every day it is fun to see the new developments and progress constantly being made on each program.

In a company where people with many different skills and levels of expertise are needed, there is always room for growth. I am currently learning the different aspects of configuration management and have been told of other areas within the company where non-engineers are needed. I have the chance to continue my education with graduate school if I choose, and to enter into different fields within the company upon completion of my education. In addition to all of the possibilities here at Orbital, I am learning many skills that are applicable in any business environment.

The amount of collaboration is impressive, with people in all of the different departments maintaining strong relationships with each other.

I shadow a more senior-level engineer. When I started, she introduced me to all of the people and resources that I can turn to for assistance on different issues. Whenever she gives me an assignment, she makes sure to give me a detailed overview of the entire process, so that I know the ultimate goal and what effects my work will have on it.
