Career Development

At Orbital, we believe that our employees are the engine that drive the company’s success. As a result, training and professional development are viewed as strategic assets. We are committed to the continual personal and professional development of our staff.

Orbital provides a wide range of opportunities to help employees build their skills and develop their careers in alignment with their job responsibilities and career goals. These include lunchtime seminars, formal classroom training, online learning, special assignments, mentoring and/or coaching, on-the-job training, and participation on special task forces. Orbital's tuition reimbursement program encourages continuing education. Internal career mobility, both upward and laterally, also provide excellent possibilities for advancement throughout the company – at all of our locations nationwide.

Management Development Program

Orbital offers formal management development training at our Chandler, AZ; Dulles, VA; and Greenbelt, MD locations. Employees in management positions and lead roles can participate in this program. The courses offered in this program have been specifically designed to reflect the Orbital work environment and incorporate management principles that have been embraced by the company’s executive management team.

Internal Movement

At Orbital, we believe that our success is dependent upon our employees.  We view professional development as a strategic asset and as such, we are fully committed to the continual professional development and growth of our staff.  This commitment is demonstrated through our hiring practices in which internal promotions and transfers account for greater than 33% of all of the full time positions filled yearly.  Orbital recognizes that internal career mobility clearly provides excellent development possibilities throughout the company - from all of our locations nationwide.

Technical Training

Periodically, technical programs are offered to employees either on-site and/or online. These can include college-level degree programs, certificate programs, and courses covering specific topics. For example, the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. currently offers a graduate level Systems Engineering Certificate Program on-site at our Dulles location. A similar on-line Master of Systems Engineering program is offered by the Arizona State University Fulton School of Engineering for our Chandler, AZ employees.

The Orbital Academy

The Orbital Academy offers employees a unique opportunity to build their technical skills in areas relevant to our operations such as astrodynamics, space radiation, finance and structural analysis. Using a combination of lecture and hands-on work, these courses are conducted by Orbital employees who are subject matter experts in their fields. Each course consists of two-hour classes taught over the course of 6-8 weeks.

Orbital Lunchtime Lecture Series

Orbital’s lunchtime lecture facilitates information/knowledge exchange between Orbital employees. These "brown bag" sessions are delivered by Orbital employee subject matter experts and are open to all interested Orbital employees. Subjects can vary from technical engineering topics to other non-engineering matters. Some recent lectures have included “Shock and Vibration in Launch Vehicles,” “Orbital Mechanics and Dynamics,” and “Business Fundamentals for Engineers,” just to name a few.

Tuition Reimbursement

We recognize that our ability to remain one of the world’s most innovative space companies is accomplished through employing individuals who never stop striving to improve themselves. Our tuition reimbursement benefit is one way in which we can assist employees in their goal to enhance their career growth and realize their full potential.

Through this benefit, Orbital reimburses tuition and other related expenses for employees enrolled in pre-approved, job-related courses at accredited colleges, universities or trade schools up to $10,000 per year. Employees are also eligible to receive additional cash awards upon attaining work-related degrees (Bachelor's, Master's or PhD).
