The G. David Low Engineering Rotation Program

G. David Low

The Orbital G. David Low Engineering Rotation Program embodies the spirit and accomplishments David achieved throughout his 23 years in the Space Industry by exposing young engineers to a wide variety of technical and programmatic challenges. A veteran of three space flights, David logged over 714 hours in space, including nearly 6 hours on a spacewalk. He was a mission specialist on STS-32 (January 9-20, 1990), was the flight engineer on STS-43 (August 2-11, 1991), and was the payload commander on STS-57 (June 21-July 1, 1993). David’s accomplishments were recognized by NASA with the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal, and an honorary doctor of engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. David joined Orbital in March 1996 where he held several high level positions including: Vice President for Safety and Mission Assurance in the Launch Systems Group, Deputy General Manager for Engineering and Operations at our ORBCOMM Global affiliate, Vice President and General Manager of the Technical Services Division and Deputy General Manager for the Advanced Programs Group. Throughout his career at Orbital, David maintained his passion for human space flight and a primary architect of Orbital’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program, which will be NASA’s primary source of Cargo Resupply Services (CRS) to the International Space Station.

David was an extraordinarily inspiring and thoughtful leader, extremely talented engineer, and a courageous space explorer who continually encouraged and assisted young engineers to strive to achieve new and innovative solutions for space exploration and science. As such we are honored to dedicate this program in his memory.

The G. David Low Engineering Job Rotation Program is a 2-year program comprised of three engineering discipline rotations including assignments in Systems Engineering or Integration & Test as well as a choice among a multitude of other Aerospace disciplines within Orbital. The program is open only to individuals employed at Orbital for more than six months and with three years experience or less since college completion. The program provides accelerated career growth and an opportunity for engineers to find the ideal fit for them within Orbital by exposing them to the different functional directorates within our Technical Operations organization. The program also allows employees to be exposed to our culture and business activities across various space and launch services programs.
