Orbital Sciences Corporation

Multi-disciplinary Engineering and Technology Services (METS) for NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)

Under METS, Orbital serves as a subcontractor to SGT Inc. providing systems engineering support with an emphasis on Guidance Navigation and Control (GN&C).  These services are provided to Goddard Space Flight Center’s Mission Engineering and Systems Analysis Division (MESA), Information Systems Division (ISD), Instrument Systems and Technology Division (ISTD), Electrical Engineering Division (EED), and related organizations. Orbital TSD personnel assist GSFC in developing space science instruments, observatories, ground systems, spacecraft, Space Shuttle payloads, International Space Station payloads and suborbital vehicles such as aircraft, sounding rockets, unmanned aerial vehicles and research balloons.

GSFC requirements are supported through all phases of space mission system development, from formulation, analysis, design, documentation, and configuration management; to fabrication, assembly, software engineering, integration, test and verification; through launch, post-launch, maintenance, and sustaining engineering. Orbital also provides simulation, non-flight modeling, and prototypes to demonstrate GSFC advancements in spacecraft and International Space Station system technology. In addition, Orbital provides candidate, feasibility, definition, architectural trades, and performance studies, as well as cost, risk, and project management services to augment GSFC program performance.

Orbital’s tailored engineering services are meeting the needs of METS customers in support of various GSFC programs, including:

  • Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)
  • James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)
  • Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)
  • Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES)
  • Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Program (GOES)
  • Tracking and Data Relay satellites (TDRS)
  • Express Pallet
  • STEREO
  • Aquarius
  • Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
